National War Monument Re-dedicated, Nov. 11, 2014 with New Dates for the South African War
Orig. plate - Image Size - 23 cm
Found - Eugene, OR
Thanks to a publicity campaign I started in 1999, through a Boer War TV documentary, research in South Africa, a huge internet Boer War Museum, and a plea, with a personal proposal to various Canadian government ministers, "TO END A CENTURY OF NEGLECT," the South-African War was finally recognized by the Canadian government, in 2005, as "an event of national historic significance" and proper government signage started to be put up in Canada and South Africa. Above Canadian Heritage Minister Stéphane Dion (above right) who wrote me a personal letter announcing the change. OK, so it's 115 years late, but the 1899-1902 dates were finally unveiled to the public, on Canada's National War Memorial, on Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, 2014. - JOHN GOLDI CSC

"Our conservator is totally blown away by the quality of the art work you provided," enthused the Curator of Photographs and Prints for one of the world's top museums, on receiving this absolutely rare piece of American memorabilia.

This litho was drawn and hand-coloured by FW Stillman, himself, the man who designed this sugar cane refining engine especially so it was "easily managed by Negroes," part of the advertising charm which he thought would make it attractive to industrialists.

Recent Museum Acquisitions

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure Lorne Kidd Smith (1880 -1966) has painted an utterly fabulous scene from Canadian history, the moment the first white man, a French priest, Father Hennepin gazed on Niagara Falls in 1678.

In the noble tradition of the Fab Five of Canadian historical painters, Lorne has created a stunningly powerful image of Niagara Falls and a landmark event from Canada's past.

Better than that, he has infused it with light and atmosphere that most "art" painters have failed to do with their canvases of this same subject.

It shows again, how superior are Canada's historical painters. They have to paint a scene with as much artistic power as the self-indulgent painters who just paint what they think sits before them.

Then they have to imagine a historic period, or an event, and marry the two after researching, at length, the clothing, and equipment that would have been used.

Their paintings end up being a tour-de-force, not only as art, but at capturing an important heritage moment for the eye of the Nation.
