"Our Bobs" Lord Roberts"
It has Brasso stains on the back left over from loving polishings many generations ago... |
(left) This wonderful Boer War brass trivet came from the estate of a long-time collector in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. It dates from 1900 and celebrates Lord Roberts and his victories that year, of lifting the sieges of Ladysmith, and Mafeking, and conquering the Boer capitals of Bloemfontein and Pretoria - all of course, with the help of Canadian volunteers. (Found in St. Catharines, ON)

The Boer War produced the very first Canadian china souvenir plates ever made. This one - from the same estate - memorializes the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York - the future King George V and Queen Mary - on their Boer War visit to Canada in 1901. (The other plate is Bloody Sunday - see "Plates" Page). Oddly enough, the plate above is not really rare because thousands of them were produced to satisfy the enormous public demand. They can frequently be found in antique malls. (below), The ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, as the Duke of York - the future King George V, pins the Victoria Cross on the tunic of Eddie Holland VC - the hero of Liliefontein - on the carpet in the shadow of Queen Victoria's statue. See Eddie Holland's story on "Great Battles 2" Page. |
